Opportunities in the United Kingdom are: ▪ University of Leicester, England ▪ University of Ulster, Northern Ireland The Country The United Kingdom is located on islands, including the northern one-sixth of the island of Ireland between the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, northwest of France. The history of the isles begins with traces of prehistoric settlements, which are found throughout the islands. Subsequently, clans of Celts, Germanics, Saxons, Vikings, Picts, and Visigoths inhabited the area. England then became part of the Roman Empire. Structures and ruins of Roman settlements, up to the northern border of Hadrian's wall, can be found in many areas. After the fall of Rome more invasions by Germanic tribes and Vikings took place. An emerging English identity began to form in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries as the English fought to throw off the rule of Norman invaders. The three kingdoms of England, Ireland and Scotland emerged in the sixteen century. In the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries Great Britain acquired its Imperial Empire, which stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. In the second half of the 20th century Britain dismantled its empire. In 1927 the current name of the country, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was adopted. The U.K. population, as reported in 2003 is 60,094,648 persons, occupying a total of 244,820 sq. km., an area slightly smaller than the state of Oregon. The national holiday is the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, celebrated on the second Saturday in June. |
