SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE THROUGH VARIOUS AGENCIES

  Northeast Ohio Trade and Economic Consortium (NEOTEC)

NEOTEC, with offices on the Kent State University Campus, is an economic development partnership formed to promote trade, business growth and economic opportunities throughout northeast Ohio.  NEOTEC has made a generous contribution to support select Kent State University students’ participation in the KSU-Geneva Semester.  One award in the amount of $1000.00 will be given in Spring 2009.

  Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE)

CIEE offers educational programs abroad for students, faculty and educational administrators, and has been doing so since 1947.  Kent State University is a CIEE Member Institution.  This long-established council offers five types of scholarships which can be applied to CIEE programs only.  To search for programs, learn about available scholarships, and the application process; visit their web site.

  Institute for International Education Study Abroad Scholarships (IEE)

IIE, founded in 1919 is the largest US higher educational exchange agency. IIE is a nonprofit organization with over 600 college and university member institutions in the United States.  Kent State University is a member.  IIE administers several scholarships in partnership with foundations including the U.S. Department of State Fulbright Grants, the Freeman Asia Awards for Study in Asia, and the Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship for undergraduate study abroad.  After entering IIE’s website address click on “Programs Portal” to begin exploring  scholarship opportunities.  Following are details regarding two of the IIE administered programs:

  Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

Awards of up to $5,000 are made for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad.  Students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at 2-year or 4-year undergraduate colleges or universities are eligible to apply.  This congressionally funded program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.

  National Security Education Program - David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships

The National Security Education Program (NSEP) provides merit-based scholarship support for undergraduate study of non-traditional languages (those other than French, German, Spanish, etc.) in areas of the world deemed critical to US national security.  NSEP scholarships, which incur a US government service obligation after college graduation for a period equivalent to the time supported abroad, apply to both Kent-sponsored and non-Kent sponsored programs; programs located in North America and Europe typically do not qualify.

  Fulbright Scholar Program 

The Fulbright is the U.S. government’s flagship academic exchange effort.  Administered by the Institute of International Exchange, and its division, CIES, the Traditional Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad to 140 countries each year for two months to an academic year. Grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.  Visit the website  to learn about other Fulbright programs for scholars.

 Rotary International

Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world.  Approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 31,000 Rotary clubs located in 166 countries.  Scholarships are available to undergraduates who have completed two years of study in the U.S. and wish to spend their junior or senior year in a foreign country where Rotary Clubs are located. The scholarship provides tuition, living costs, international travel, and up to two months of intensive language training. Students interested in applying should note that the deadlines for these awards are as much as a year in advance of the proposed time abroad. Also check with local Rotary clubs, as scholarships available vary according to district.

  The Rhodes Scholarship

This scholarship provides for two years of study at Oxford University, United Kingdom.  It is usually pursued by students who wish to acquire a master’s, PhD, or a second bachelor’s.  Rhodes Scholars are chosen in a three-stage process.  First, candidates must be endorsed by their college or university.  Committees of Selection in each of the fifty states then nominate candidates who are interviewed by District Selection Committees in eight regions of the United States.  Visit the website address to learn more about this opportunity.
