My research focuses on the motion of ocean currents and water masses on times scales of months to years and spatial scales from 100-5000 km. I'm particularly interested in exchanges of water masses between ocean basins and on the effects of undersea topography on the turbulence of ocean jets.  My work utilizes a combination of techniques, including statistical analysis of data from Earth-orbiting satellites, measurements collected at sea, and computer simulations of ocean flow using theoretical fluid dynamic models.  Although most of my projects focus on southern hemisphere oceans, I also work on more local topics, such as using satellite data to better understand circulation within Lake Erie.
